چکیده

Like most other orthopaedic surgeons, we have never been satisfied with any available criteria for prognosis of Legg-Perthcs’ disease. Although the symptomatology is fairly consistent, the radiological changes are sometimes difficult to interpret as to the stage of the disease and its probable outcome. Most reported studies are concerned primarily with the appearance of the femoral head. We, on the other hand, have been especially interested in the changes in shape of the femoral neck. Can these changes be explained in terms of the blood supply to the head and neck and its influence on bone growth and remodelling? We know that shortening and widening of the neck in Legg-Perthes’ disease are variable. Can this be related to the extent of necrosis of the head ? Furthermore, can the degree of shortening and widening in the early stages be used to predict the ultimate anatomical shape of the femoral head ? The following studies were undertaken to investigate these possibilities.

Evolution in diagnosis and treatment of Legg-Calve-Perthes disease

Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD) is an idiopathic osteonecrosis of the femoral head with variable complications and resultant deformity of the femoral head and osteoarthritis. Suggested risk factors are acetabular retroversion, obesity, latitude, hyperactivity, and coagulopathy. The most commonly applied classification is based on radiolucency in the lateral pillar of the femoral head, which i...

Clinical Outcome of Femoral Osteotomy in Patients with Legg-Calve´-Perthes Disease

Background: Legg-Calve´-Perthes disease is a juvenile idiopathic osteonecrosis in which the blood supply of femoral head is not sufficient and the bone dies provisionally. The aim of this study is to evaluate outcome of Femoral osteotomy in children with LCPD in our University Hospital.   Methods: In a descriptive analytic study, between 2008 and 2013, patients with the diagnosis of Legg-Calv...

[Prognosis and treatment of Legg-Calve-Perthes' disease].

Synonyms for this disease include “avascular necrosis of the femoral head” and “aseptic necrosis of the femoral head”, “Perthes disease” and “Legg Perthes” disease, “osteochon-dritis”, “coxae juvenilis”, “coxa plana” and “idiopathic osteosis”. The terms “avascular/aseptic necrosis of the femoral head” are also used to describe a process of femoral head necro-sis in dogs following traumatic frac...

Avascular necrosis of the capital epiphysis following osteomyelitis of the proximal femoral metaphysis.

In this paper we wish to emphasise the danger of avascular necrosis of the capital femoral epiphysis arising as a late complication of osteomyelitis of the intertrochanteric region. This necrosis is primarily aseptic and is believed to follow interference with the vulnerable vascular channels supplying the capital femoral epiphysis rather than spread of infection into the joint. If, however, th...

Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease: current concepts.

Perthes is a serious but self-limited disorder. If it is a self limiting disease, then why one should think of treating it. The aim of treatment is to prevent femoral head deformity and subsequent osteoarthrosis. There is still no clear guideline for the management of Perthes disease. This is because of the controversies in all most all the aspects of the disease; etiology, classification, natu...
